Built with identical 72.8 kWh batteries, both the 2024 Subaru Solterra and the Toyota bZ4X boast a range around 227 miles on AWD models.Â
Likewise, both vehicles perform similarly in terms of electricity efficiency on comparable AWD trims, reaching up to 104 MPGe combined city/highway.
Safety Features
With an impressive suite of intelligent safety features that help drivers avoid or mitigate hazards, the Solterra is the most advanced Subaru to date.
One of the most significant safety features in the EV SUV is the all-new hands-free Traffic Jam Assist. In low-speed traffic, it allows drivers to maintain their lane at low speeds up to 25 mph in heavily congested conditions.
The Solterra also comes with Lane Change Assist and Front Cross Traffic Alert. Lane Change Assist allows drivers to change lanes on command. Front Cross Traffic Alert monitors surroundings for unexpected traffic crossing from either side and notifies the driver to approaching vehicles, making it safer when pulling into an intersection.
The Toyota bZ4X does not offer features such as Traffic Jam Assist, Lane Change Assist, and Front Cross Traffic Alert.Â
Other standard safety features for the Solterra and bZ4X include:
- Pre-collision system with automatic braking: The Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra have comparable safety systems and technologies. The bZ4X has Toyota Safety Sense™, and the Solterra has Subaru EyeSight® technologies. Both use smart sensors to detect potential collisions and apply brakes as needed to avoid an accident.
- Lane keep assist and preventive alerts: Known as Lane Centering in the Solterra and Lane Tracing Assist in the bZ4x, these features sense when a driver drifts from their lane into another and alerts them with audible or visual cues. These safety features can also intervene with small corrective measures if necessary.
- Blind-Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert: Both the bZ4X and Solterra offer this helpful safety technology (which uses the same name in both SUVs). Blind-Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert notifies the driver when another vehicle or object enters their blind spot while driving. It also operates when the vehicle is in reverse, such as when pulling out of a parking space.
- Cruise control and distancing: Called Adaptive Cruise Control in the Solterra and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control in the bZ4X, this feature helps drivers maintain steady speed and a safe distance from other motorists while on the highway.
