David Higgins and Craig Drew completed day two of the 2014 Lake Superior Performance Rally in first place ending a very successful season on a high note. Their Subaru WRX STI handled the waterlogged roads without trouble although lack of grip was a significant issue. On some roads, water levels continued to increase throughout the day creating small ponds that racers tackled as best as they could. The resistance through the water holes was dramatic and David Higgins commented that during Stage 15 (Herman – Nestoria) their WRX STI almost came to a complete stop, as the water was so deep and extensive.
Teammates Travis Pastrana and Chrissie Beavis unfortunately did not share the success and during a fast right hand turn on Stage 13 went wide and got pulled into the soft edge. Although there was no damage, the car was stuck in mud and despite a significant effort to free the car they were unable to do so within the allotted maximum time. It was an unfortunate and abrupt ending to an otherwise great event for SRT USA #199. The close competition between Higgins and Pastrana kept the Michigan rally fans on their toes and made for an exciting event.
This weekends Lake Superior Performance Rally wraps up the 2014 Rally America National Championship Series. It was an incredible year for Subaru Rally Team USA and we look forward to bringing you more Subaru Motorsports excitement next year.
Stay tuned for the final Red Bull Global Rallycross event in Las Vegas in early November. It airs on NBC Sunday November 16th at 1:30PM EST.
