Putting a little love in people’s hearts.

Since 2008, Share the Love has donated more than $94 million to charity, with customers choosing between four national and over 660 local charities. This year’s event, ending January 2nd, is on track to bring that total to over $115 million.

Sahar and Charlie

ASPCA®

Some pets and their owners were just meant to be together. Sahar Kashi wanted a dog of her own for some time when she visited her local animal shelter. Once there, she immediately fell in love with a little black beauty named Charlie. Thrilled, she immediately told them she wanted him, but was broken-hearted to learn she was too late; he had just been adopted.

The next day Sahar decided to cheer herself up with a hike in the foothills near her home and was shocked to see Charlie scampering toward her, towing his new owner behind him. Sharing the coincidence with the man, he gave her the best news possible. “Turns out I can’t keep him.”

Unbelievably, days later he was hers.

Vanessa and Carmelo

ASPCA®

After relocating from the East Coast to California, the last thing Vanessa Giordano needed was to lose her job. But, there she was. In a brand new city, already feeling a little lonely and blue, she now felt herself slipping into a real depression.

“He knew something was wrong,” said Vanessa of her best friend, Carmelo, a jet-black mutt she rescued years before. “So he started giving me kisses.” As he had done countless times before, he instantly made her feel better. Something he’d been doing since the minute they met.

Maybe it’s because Carmelo knows a thing or two about going through difficult times. A stray who had been hit by a car, Carmelo ended up at a shelter and was on the mend when Vanessa first saw him.

“I reached into the cage and he just looked up at me and gave me a kiss.” That’s all it took and he’s been raising her spirits ever since.

“He wakes up every morning so excited to be alive. He’s taught me so much: enjoy the simple things, be grateful and never give up. There is always hope.”

Make-A-Wish®

“ I don’t have words to express how I feel about Make-A-Wish,” said Nina Iacono.

For many families in the thick of battling a critical illness, the promise of a vacation away from the daily schedule of treatments can have a profound effect.

Such was the case for the Iacono family. Diagnosed with cancer, their daughter Lillia bravely muscled through her surgeries and hospital stays, but it was taking a toll on her spirit.

When Nina shared with her daughter that her wish to visit the Bahamas and swim with the dolphins was going to happen, the spark immediately returned and Lillia beamed.

“It was definitely something this family needed,” said Nina. “They helped Lillia be a kid again.”

Colin and Riley Friedman

Make-A-Wish®

Given the chance to wish for anything, most kids would think of something for themselves.

Riley Friedman is definitely not like most kids.

When Riley, who was battling cancer, found out she was eligible for a wish, her father, Colin, was completely floored by her wish.

“My wish was to be a genie and help all the sick people who had cancer like me.”

So, with the help of Make-A-Wish, her wish came true. Kid after kid, many in need of cheering up after their treatments, filed in and were delighted to discover Riley there to grant them a wish.

“There was one boy who really liked race cars,” said Riley. “So, we got him a race car, and I said, ‘Your wish is granted.’”

Colin said he’d love to take credit for Riley’s incredible selflessness, but he can’t. “She’s a miracle. She’s a complete miracle.”

Carol Watkins and Amy Sattel

Meals on Wheels

For most of her life Carol Watkins was an independent force of nature, working full-time, raising a special-needs child, active in her church.

And then she began to lose her sight.

The woman so many others relied on now found herself unable to manage it all on her own. So she turned to Meals on Wheels. She got everything she expected and one incredible thing she didn’t – a new best friend. Amy Sattel had been volunteering for years but felt a special connection immediately with Carol.

“She is one of those people who can completely inspire you,” said Amy. “I am lucky to have her in my life.”

For millions of people, Meals on Wheels provides nourishment for both the body and soul, giving people like Carol a connection to the outside world they might not have without them.

“I think we were made for each other,” says Carol.

Meals on Wheels

“Delivering to Freda is the absolute highlight of my day.”

Donna Gould met Freda Mendelson the second time she ever delivered for Meals on Wheels. “I immediately felt like she was my grandmother – sharp as a tack, energetic and absolutely hilarious.”

She’s also 95 years old. Living alone at that age can be very isolating, which is why so many clients of Meals on Wheels look forward to the companionship as much as they do the food.

“The best part for me is I have visitors coming in,” said Freda. “I really look forward to the day she comes.”

The Nabors

Murray, Cyrus and Darius Nabors

National Park Foundation

“Nobody wants to admit that they’re mortal.”

Murray Nabors was a fairly typical father of two very young boys when his future was shattered by a cancer diagnosis. Given six months to live, he decided to write a diary and put down on paper all the things he wanted to pass on to his children after he had gone. At the top of the list was his passion for the outdoors and, specifically, America’s incredible national parks.

Well, 25 years later, having defied the experts and survived, Murray was cleaning out his basement and discovered the long-forgotten diary packed away in a box. He shared it with his now-grown sons and they were moved to tears. “It was incredible,” Darius said after reading it. Inspired by the passion for the parks he found within its pages, Darius quit his job and devoted the next year of his life to visiting every national park in America.

“There’s always more things you want to do than you have time to do,” said Murray. “That’s really the thing I wanted to pass on to my boys.”

Will Malan

National Park Foundation

The passions of most people are pretty ordinary; sports, music, fashion, family. Unlike most people, Will Malan is blessed with a truly unique love: birds.“Chickadee, dee, dee. Chickadee, dee, dee. That’s my favorite.”

It is this unusual and idiosyncratic love that led him to become a bird-calling expert and a bird-watching champion. It’s also what inspired him to explore dozens of America’s Crown Jewels, committing himself to doing his part to preserve them.

“National parks and bird-watching go hand in hand with me, and some birds only live in national parks. So, for me, it’s incredibly important to protect these places I love, so my kids can love them, too.”
