“At Subaru, we know that our commitment to protecting the Earth through smart environmental practices is crucial to ensuring the vitality of our planet’s natural spaces. It’s something our customers and retailers inherently understand, as well as something that we continually work to improve.”
— Jeff Walters, President and COO, Subaru of America, Inc. Along with our retailers across the country, Subaru works to reduce waste, safeguard resources for future generations, and preserve natural spaces – making real, meaningful commitments to these goals. All Subaru products are manufactured in zero-landfill production plants, and Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. is the only U.S. automobile production plant to be designated a backyard wildlife habitat by the National Wildlife Federation.
Over the past five years, Subaru and participating retailers have partnered with TerraCycle® by collecting hard-to-recycle trash that is transformed into useful goods that benefit our communities. So far, over 8 million pieces of trash has been kept out of landfills. Find a participating retailer and learn more about how we’re making our world a more sustainable place.
Since 2008, Carter Subaru has been “On the Road to Carbon Neutral” by “Planting a Forest… One Test Drive at a Time.” This Subaru retailer is offsetting their customers’ carbon footprint by planting over 225,000 trees in the Mountains to Sound Greenway – an iconic 1.5 million acres of connected natural lands in and around the Seattle area. These native trees improve air quality, reduce greenhouse gases and enhance recreational green spaces, benefiting both our health and well-being. How does it work? For every test drive taken at Carter Subaru, one tree is planted. For every vehicle purchased, another three trees are planted. Why a total of four trees? Because four trees that live a lifespan of about 75 years will absorb the approximate amount of carbon dioxide of the average car driven one year. Carter Subaru’s commitment extends beyond the financial, as they and many of their customers have also volunteered more than 1,200 hours to remove invasive species and plant trees. By doing this, they have created a legacy that will enrich our environment and our community for generations.

Across the country, many retailers have received a certification in our Eco-Friendly Retailer Program. What does this mean? The Subaru Eco-Friendly Retailer Program is a voluntary environmental program designed for retailers who want to make a positive impact on their community and local environment. This comprehensive program aims to help Subaru retailers minimize environmental impact by focusing on reduced energy consumption. The program focuses on five key areas of a facility: Energy Efficiency, Water Conservation, Recycling, Waste Management, and Community Involvement. For example, Subaru retailers look to reduce water consumption by installing low-flow fixtures and a water-efficient car wash. Simultaneously, we ensure our eco-friendly retailers practice proper disposal of harmful waste including oil, coolant, batteries, and tires. Our partner Green Dealer Support concluded an onsite inspection to make sure these retailers are adhering to the requirements. We honor the stores that have been awarded the Eco-Friendly Retailer Program Certification as they work toward sustainability and doing right by our planet. Check your local retailer’s website for an Eco-Friendly Retailer Certification badge!

Throughout the country, our retailers volunteer to help clean up our Earth. With the help of Subaru ambassadors, community volunteers, and employees, retailers search their local communities for ways to help the environment. Retailer-led clean-ups take place at a variety of locations, from local parks and highways to the front steps of their community partners. Our retailers are proud and committed to protecting and preserving the Earth not just through our words, but also these impactful actions.
Subaru retailer Don Mealey Sport Subaru bought 75 acres of land that had been treated as an unofficial public dump for five decades. To practice their commitment to the environment, Mealey Subaru went through a four-year multimillion-dollar remediation of the wetland property. Mealey Subaru continued their dedication by donating 40 acres, along with $100,000, to Conservation Florida to protect the property’s vital ecosystem. This land now is the home of 20-30 species of reptiles and amphibians, fox squirrels, red-shouldered hawks, and a variety of vegetation. Don Mealey Sport Subaru has permanently protected a critical piece of one of the last remaining unpaved forested wetlands in the heart of Orlando.
