  • Exploring a greener world.

Make a difference by helping Subaru study vehicle emissions.

At Subaru of America, Inc., we strive to build vehicles that help make our world a better, safer, and greener place. All automotive manufacturers are required to capture a sampling of in-use vehicle emission levels and report the data to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to verify compliance with emission regulations.

To accomplish this, we are seeking the help of owners like you to volunteer for our In-Use Verification Program (IUVP). If your Subaru is selected, we’ll pick it up, provide a complimentary rental and return your vehicle washed and with a full tank of gas. You’ll also be monetarily compensated for your participation!

Read below to learn more about this program and vehicle eligibility, as well as for a list of frequently asked questions. You may also contact us at: iuvp@subaru.com

MY19 Ascent and MY19 Legacy vehicles

Low-Mileage Group

Starting at 10,000 Miles

1 or more years in service

MY16 Impreza and MY16 Forester vehicles

High-Mileage Group

Starting at 50,000 Miles

4 or more years in service

We are randomly selecting current Subaru owners from three different regions of the country and conducting vehicle emissions testing based on model, mileage, and age. Eligible vehicles for participation must fall into one of the two emissions testing groups – the Low-Mileage Group (vehicles with at least 10,000 miles and approximately one year in service) or the High-Mileage Group (vehicles with at least 50,000 miles and approximately four years in service). The High-Mileage Group testing includes vehicles that have over 100,000 miles with more than four years of service visits.

Owners near a testing facility in each region will be sent an invitation by mail that includes a questionnaire, program details, and a return envelope with prepaid postage. The information owners provide will be screened for eligibility to participate in the program.

  • Locations of testing facilities.

Subaru of America, Inc. has hired third-party contract companies to contact eligible owners and transport their vehicles for IUVP testing. These facilities are located in three cities within the states of California, Colorado, and Michigan.

  • Why do we test?

IUVP testing is mandatory for all vehicle manufacturers to monitor vehicle emissions. The data collected helps the government and our company verify emissions performance.

  • What do we test?

Exhaust Emissions Testing. Vehicles selected for testing will be placed on a dynamometer – or dyno – which is like a treadmill for cars. The equipment helps simulate real-world driving while the vehicle remains stationary. Three different drive-cycle tests will be performed that mimic city and highway driving. During operation, sensors connected to the end of the exhaust pipe(s) analyze emission gases.

  • What else do we test?

Evaporative Testing. Our testing facility in Michigan has a chamber in which vehicles are placed to measure traces of evaporative vapors. The Sealed Housing Evaporative Determination (SHED) test simulates a vehicle parked in a garage and monitors vapors that may be given off by the fuel tank as well as from materials like rubber and plastic. The On-Board Refueling Vapor Recovery (ORVR) test checks for any vapors not captured by the fuel tank’s charcoal canister while refueling.

IUVP participants are rewarded with:

Do I have to participate in the program?

No, your participation is entirely voluntary.

How can I participate if I didn’t receive an invitation by mail?

By regulation, owners are chosen from a randomized list and cannot “volunteer” for the In-Use Verification Program. For more information, click here.

Why should I participate?

By participating and if selected, you’ll receive monetary compensation via check, a free vehicle wash and full tank of gas, and a complimentary rental while your vehicle is used for testing. You will also help Subaru of America, Inc., the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) improve air quality by monitoring emissions.

Where will the testing take place?

Vehicle testing is conducted at lab facilities in California, Colorado, and Michigan.

How long will the testing take?

Usually 2-3 weeks for a test, but scheduling and logistics may increase the time. We will provide information about any delay.

Where do I drop off my Subaru?

Our contracted third-party company will coordinate the pickup of your vehicle and its exchange with a rental at your home, office, or an agreed-upon location.

When will I receive my compensation check?

You will receive your compensation check in person when your vehicle is returned to you after testing is complete.

What type of rental vehicle will I receive during testing?

Participants will be provided a newer-model rental vehicle to drive while testing is being performed.

What if my Subaru doesn’t meet the mileage requirements?

The program requires test vehicles have at least 10,000 miles for the Low-Mileage Group and at least 50,000 miles for the High-Mileage Group. If your vehicle’s mileage doesn’t meet these requirements, you can still complete and return the response card you received (with the anticipated date you will have the minimum miles) by mail. Our third-party contract company will ask for updated mileage if your vehicle is needed for testing.

Will this affect my vehicle’s warranty?

No. Participating in this program will NOT affect your vehicle’s warranty.

How many miles will be put on my Subaru?

Approximately 100-150 miles. Total mileage will vary depending on the number and types of tests performed and the distance driven to and from the testing facility.

How will my vehicle be protected?

During testing, your vehicle will be insured by Subaru of America, Inc. or our contracted third-party company. Vehicles being tested will be stored inside the test facility or locked in a secure parking area.

If any vehicle repairs are needed, will Subaru fix them for me?

Subaru of America, Inc. will coordinate with your local Subaru retailer to repair/replace parts affecting vehicle emissions found during testing at no cost to you while keeping the faulty parts for investigation. Missed maintenances like oil changes, tire rotations, etc., will not be performed through this program.

Why not use retailer, rental, or company vehicles for testing instead?

In compliance with this program, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) require the procurement of vehicles from individual owners. Other vehicles may not be representative of real-world driver use.

Why was I contacted by someone other than Subaru?

Our third-party contract company is responsible for contacting eligible Subaru owners about this program. If you have any concerns, please contact us at: iuvp@subaru.com.
