A Culture of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging

At Subaru of America, we believe that diversity makes us stronger. Diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) are core to our culture, how we make decisions and how we treat each other as humans first. From our employees and our retailers to our local communities where we live and work, we value each unique story and strive to create a space for belonging and an environment where all people feel a sense of opportunity.

Subaru’s DEIB Mission and Vision

Subaru of America strives to create an atmosphere where the principles of our Love Promise are respected and practiced by all colleagues. We want our business to be reflective of our country and our customers – where people of all races, genders, sexual orientation, ages, abilities and backgrounds are welcomed and embraced for who they are and have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

We are committed to engaging with our Subaru community so that all feel they are treated fairly and with understanding and compassion. We aim to inspire and empower our colleagues to be authentic in who they are, allowing them to think creatively about how they can help us achieve our Love Promise. We are eager to serve our colleagues, customers and partners by:

  • Learning how to recognize and acknowledge biases when making decisions.
  • Opening our hearts and minds to stories from colleagues and customers to foster unity and support.
  • Valuing talent and skills from all backgrounds and experiences.
  • Empowering colleagues with different experiences and perspectives throughout our organization.

Taking Action for Our Subaru Family

The entire Subaru of America team takes our commitment to DEIB very seriously. We look forward to continuing to align DEIB with our Love Promise principles.

Subaru is committed to having a diverse talent pipeline with actions that enable attraction, development and retention of qualified candidates and employees. As a means of casting a broader net to attract top talent, we have established strategic relationships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and diverse membership groups such as the Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA) and the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA). We are also continuing to evaluate and improve our talent practices—hiring, promotion, performance management, development and compensation—to ensure equal opportunity for all employees.

To expand our DEIB knowledgebase, Subaru launched a new comprehensive multi-year learning curriculum to confront bias, communicate about topics of difference, and build skills for inclusive conversations and understanding. This curriculum is included not only for our nearly 1,300 employees, but also for our more than 630 Subaru retailers across the country.

Belonging Initiatives at Subaru

Belonging at SOA is defined as being wholly accepted and included by those around you—which is the active ingredient in creating a culture based on respect and trust, and in the spirit of our Love Promise.

Across the company and within individual teams, Subaru has several inclusion, belonging and diversity-based employee programs. Our biggest and farthest-reaching is our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). These employee-led, diversity-focused groups were formalized in 2018 and today, nearly 650 employees are members of Subaru’s five ERGs. These five ERGS are:

  • Black & Latino Employee Network for Diversity at Subaru (BLENDS)
  • Evolve (Mental and Physical Health & Wellbeing)
  • Out and Ally (LGBTQ+ and allies)
  • Subaru Armed Forces Resource Group for Employees (SARGE)
  • The Subaru Women’s Network

Putting Accountability into Action – Supporting Our Diverse Communities

Subaru has long been an advocate of DEIB efforts and is more committed than ever. Over the years, we have taken immense pride in our partnerships — especially our long-standing ones — including our quarter-century partnership with the National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers (NAMAD) and our 20-year partnership with the Rainbow PUSH Coalition.

For nearly 30 years, Subaru has supported the LGBTQ+ community: from our long-term relationship with PFLAG and its life-changing programs nationwide, to supporting gay and lesbian film festivals and pride parades, to being the first U.S. auto company to offer domestic partner benefits. Subaru has also been recognized for our DEIB efforts by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) as early as 1999. Subaru received a score of 100% on the HRC 2021 Corporate Equality Index, making it the sixth consecutive year (and ninth year overall) that SOA has earned top marks on the nation’s premier benchmarking survey and report measuring corporate policies and practices related to LGBTQ+ workplace equality.

Guided by the Subaru Love Promise, we have worked tirelessly in the automotive industry and beyond to positively impact the communities where we live and work, including our hometown of Camden, NJ. We work to ensure that we continue to build relationships with diverse communities to move forward together. Over the last two years, Subaru and the Subaru Foundation have supported the work of diverse communities by:

  • Launching The Subaru University Scholarship for Automotive Excellence to enable underrepresented Camden, NJ residents to receive an associate’s degree in Automotive Technology and be trained as automotive technicians
  • Partnering Subaru-U scholarship recipients with Subaru retailers to provide mentorship to enhance their training and better prepare these students for full-time employment opportunities
  • Hosting 5-to-1 employee and retailer matching gift programs for donations to organizations that promoted social justice
  • Donating to the Equal Justice Initiative (Subaru leadership and the Black & Latino Employee Network for Diversity at Subaru)
  • Supporting the Women of Color in Automotive Network (WOCAN), with the goal of sponsoring high-potential women of color with advancement and mobility in mind. Through the partnership with Subaru, WOCAN will continue to create opportunities for women of color to engage more meaningfully in automotive communities
  • Our most recent support helping the PFLAG National organization produce a new resource on nonbinary identities for parents, families and allies that focuses on how the emergence of people with nonbinary identities provides an opportunity to learn more about gender and how others understand it.
