Subaru CIO Wins 2010 SIM Leadership Award

Philadelphia - December 7, 2010 - The Society for Information Management (SIM), the premier network for information technology leaders, recently presented Brian Simmermon, Chief Information Officer, Subaru of America, Inc. with the fifth annual SIM Leadership award.

Throughout his career, Mr. Simmermon has shown vision and leadership. His innovations have helped the direct-to-consumer marketplace to grow, regardless of the economic circumstances.

Mr. Simmermon, who resides in Blue Anchor, N.J., joined Subaru, a $6B automobile manufacturer with a primary focus on sales and marketing, supply chain / logistics and dealership support, in 2005 as Chief Information Officer. Within two weeks of joining, he performed a company-wide technology assessment and determined that he had inherited a large collection of applications, many of which duplicated functionality. Establishing the mantra, "Simplicity, Flexibility, and Cost Effectiveness", Brian began reducing the total number of applications, moved to a small core set of systems – including Oracle and Siebel - and brought his relatively wide-range of hardware into a substantially smaller footprint. As a by-product, the payoff was a 95% staff retention during a five year period.

Through vendor management, listening to his internal customers and the Subaru consumer and through a strategic plan, Brian then moved the technology group forward with aggressive business deliverables. With a combination of customer relationship management tools and the support of marketing initiatives, Brian and his team helped Subaru to become one of the most successful brands during the two most difficult automotive years – 2008 and 2009. In those years, Subaru sold more vehicles month-over-month and year-over-year. By 2010, Subaru's vehicle sales were at an all-time record. The IT systems transition journey enabled Subaru to be the only car company to increase sales and gain significant market share while the automotive industry faltered.

Prior to Subaru, Mr. Simmermon spent two years with direct-to-consumer giant QVC, Inc where he headed up their Applications Development group. With international responsibility, Brian managed all design, development and integration of applications for over 4000 users in this $5.5B company. His main system was SAP though Brian also introduced Service Oriented Architecture, J2EE and other then modern technologies. Prior to QVC, Mr. Simmermon was with the Franklin Mint for 15 years moving from manager Chief Operating Officer, European Operations and Chief Information Officer. Brian ultimately managed a staff of 200 people and lived both in the US and the UK during that period.

Mr. Simmermon has presented at numerous conferences and is very active in the technology community. He sits on the Oracle Customer Advisory Council and has been a keynote speaker at several Oracle events. Mr. Simmermon is also active as the Chairman of the CIO Roundtable of the Greater Philadelphia Senior Executive Group (GPSEG) and has judged for several SIM Leadership awards. He has also presented at the SIM CIO Forum and Executive IT Summit. Earlier in his career, Brian was also a founding member of The Cavanaugh Group.

Mr. Simmermon graduated from Rowan University with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science.

The SIM Leadership Award is given to SIM members who, through exceptional services, have volunteered their time and have contributed significantly to SIM and the SIM community.
