Subaru Debuts Next Generation EyeSight™ System

- Technology to feature on more Subaru models

- New Color Camera Based Driver Assist System

- Also debuting are Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert

- Nine out of 10 current Eyesight purchasers would recommend the technology

Cherry Hill, N.J. – January 23, 2014 - Subaru of America, Inc. has announced the debut of a new and improved version of its popular EyeSight™ driver assistance system. The new system now features color stereo cameras that deliver an approximately 40 percent longer and wider detection range, brake light detection and can now fully function when the speed differential between the Eyesight equipped car and another vehicle is up to 30 mph, up from 19 mph. The current generation Eyesight system earned the highest rating given by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS), superior, when the IIHS conducted it first test of accident avoidance technology last year.

Combining safety and convenience features, the Subaru EyeSight system is one of the most affordable crash avoidance technologies available in the U.S. market. On sale for almost two years in the U.S. the system has been widely praised by safety experts and customers. Research shows that nine out of ten Subaru customers who purchased the EyeSight system would recommend it and more than half say that the system has helped avoid an accident.

Also debuting in Subaru models later this year are three additional technologies; blind spot detection, lane change assist and rear cross traffic alert. These new systems will be introduced on Subaru’s product line-up starting in 2014.

Eyesight Features

The new Eyesight uses two color cameras developed by Subaru and functions more smoothly and has a quicker reaction time. EyeSight is mounted inside the car on the upper edge of the windshield and the housing for the new Eyesight system has been made 15 percent smaller. Locating the system within the vehicle reduces the potential for damage that could occur in bumper-mounted systems. The EyeSight system processes stereo images to identify the vehicles traveling in front, as well as obstacles, traffic lanes and other items. The video information is relayed to the EyeSight computer, which is also networked with the car’s braking system and electronic throttle control. EyeSight is also capable of detecting pedestrians in the vehicle’s path and can activate in order to mitigate or even avoid the collision. Under certain circumstances, Eyesight is able to bring the car to a complete stop, thus avoiding a collision.

The Eyesight system integrates adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking and vehicle lane departure warning. At relative speeds under 30 mph, EyeSight’s Pre-Collision Braking System can detect vehicles in the car’s path and, if the driver has not applied the brake, the system can do so to slow the vehicle or bring it to a full stop to help avoid the potential collision. Pre-Collision Braking is always on in the background to act as a second set of eyes for the driver. It can also be turned off temporarily for off-road or rough road travel.

Lane departure warning monitors traffic lane markers and lines and can detect if the car begins to wander outside the intended lane without a turn signal being used, or begins to sway within the travel lane. Using the turn signal cancels the warning.

Adaptive Cruise Control is intended for freeway use and can maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, braking or accelerating the car to maintain the driver-selected target speed and traveling distance. Adaptive Cruise Control operates from 1-90 mph and can fully bring the vehicle to a stop if the system “locks on” to a vehicle ahead. As an added convenience, Adaptive Cruise Control assists the driver in “stop and go” traffic by maintaining distance from the vehicle ahead.

New Technologies for 2015 Model Year

Blind Spot Detection

This driver assistance technology senses cars coming up in the vehicle’s blind spot and if the turn signal is on, it alerts the driver not to change lanes. The driver is warned by a flashing light on the side view mirror and the alert stays active until the car in the adjacent lane is in view. Subaru BSD uses radar sensors on the side and rear of the car.

Lane Change Assist

The lane changes assist system warns the driver of a fast approaching vehicle on either side of the car. It only flashes an alert in the side view mirror when the turn signal is engaged and has a range of 230 ft.

Rear Cross Traffic Alert

Rear cross traffic alert uses rear facing radar to detect vehicles approaching from behind on either side of the vehicle such as when reversing out of a parking space at the mall. The radar sweeps 230 feet on either side of the vehicle to detect an approaching vehicle and triggers a warning light on the dash. The system can also detect cars up to 23 ft behind the vehicle.

Cautions

EyeSight, Blind Spot Detection, Land Change Assist and Rear Traffic Alert are not designed as a substitute for due care and attention to the road. The systems may not react in every situation. There are certain operational limitations, such as when weather conditions obscure the view of the cameras. Even with the advanced technology used, a driver with good vision and who is paying attention will always be the best safety system.

All-New 2015 Subaru WRX® STI® Debuts at North American International Auto Ahow in Detroit

• New platform offers a stiffer, more agile chassis for Subaru’s global performance flagship model

• Bold new sedan model with aero body design

• High-performance chassis with new Active Torque Vectoring

• 305 hp turbo BOXER engine; most powerful engine in the segment

• Driver Controlled Center Differential All-Wheel Drive

• STI Launch Edition limited to 1,000 available

DETROIT - January 14, 2014 - Subaru of America, Inc. today introduced the all-new 2015 WRX STI, Subaru’s iconic performance flagship model, at the North American International Auto Show. Subaru will offer a WRX STI Launch Edition, limited to 1,000 units and exclusively featuring WR Blue paint and gold BBS® forged alloy wheels and unique interior trim.

Powered by the legendary 305-horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged BOXER engine, the 2015 WRX STI debuts a new four-door wide-body design, built on a stiffer chassis for even greater handling agility and precision. The WRX STI provides a rally-bred drivetrain and all-wheel drive handling that is unique to this model. Handling is enhanced with a stiffer chassis, firmer springs and faster steering (13.0:1 ratio).

New for the 2015 WRX STI, Active Torque Vectoring joins an arsenal of the model’s proven handling technologies that includes Multi-Mode Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, Multi-Mode Vehicle Dynamics Control, and a Brembo® Performance Brake System with Super Sport ABS.

The 2015 WRX STI carries its bold personality inside, where new Alcantara seating surfaces accented by red and black leather bolsters and red stitching set the tone for the upgraded and roomier cabin. A driver-focused interior remains integral to the WRX STI performance character, with the new model debuting a motorsports-inspired flat-bottom steering wheel and new whiplash-reducing performance-design front seats with height and tilt-adjustable head restraints. A wide array of new user technologies include, for the first time in a WRX STI, availability of a harman/kardon® premium audio system.

Iconic STI Design Exclusively in Sedan Form

A bolder front design makes the 2015 WRX STI look ready to devour the road. The “nose-cone” configuration combines the grille and bumper cap into one unit ahead of the hood, which for the 2015 model is made from aluminum to reduce weight over the front of the car. Narrower headlights, designed to evoke a raptor’s stare, flank the Subaru hexagonal grille. It’s a more powerful stare thanks to new standard LED low-beam headlights.

The special hood, fenders, doors and quarters, bumpers, headlights and taillight clusters convey the WRX STI identity. As on previous WRX STI models, a functional hood scoop supplies the intercooler with fresh air, and in the 2015 model it is set more deeply into the hood to provide better forward visibility.

Other new performance-oriented details include foglight surrounds with a carbon fiber-like pattern and front fender vents that feature a mesh screen. A full aerodynamic body package includes the large trunk spoiler that has been a WRX STI signature feature. A rear diffuser, LED taillights and LED center high-mount stop lamp (CHMSL) leave a distinctive signature.

New, Stiffer Chassis for Greater Handling Agility

The 2015 WRX STI body structure makes greater use of high-tensile steel than the previous model and features special stiffening elements at key locations. The stiffer chassis helps yield a super-quick steering response that was benchmarked against top-handling sports cars. The 13.0:1 steering ratio provides a quick 2.5 turns lock-to-lock compared to 14.5:1 and 2.8 for the standard WRX model.

As on previous WRX STI models, the 2015 version uses an exclusive inverted-strut front suspension system that provides higher levels of cornering agility. Aluminum front lower L-arms reduce unsprung vehicle weight. The STI-tuned suspension teams with standard 18-inch wheels and 245/40R18 summer performance tires, with the WRX STI Launch Edition and WRX STI Limited models featuring BBS® forged aluminum-alloy wheels.

305-hp Turbo BOXER Engine

The 2015 WRX STI is powered by a 2.5-liter turbocharged/intercooled 4-cylinder BOXER engine that employs the Dual Active Valve Control System (Dual AVCS). The engine, which is exclusive to the STI model, produces 305 horsepower (SAE) at 6,000 rpm and 290 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,000 rpm.

The WRX STI engine is teamed exclusively with a specially reinforced 6-speed manual transmission, which includes an STI short-throw shifter in the Launch Edition model. Incline Start Assist can momentarily prevent the car from rolling backward when being driven away from a stop on an incline.

The Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-DRIVE) powertrain management system allows the driver to tailor the car’s driving characteristics by choosing from among three selectable modes – “Intelligent,” “Sport” and “Sport Sharp” – using a rotary dial on the center console. SI-DRIVE alters vehicle performance characteristics by regulating the engine control module and by fine-tuning the electronic throttle control system.

Multi-Mode DCCD All-Wheel Drive with Three-Mode Vehicle Dynamics Control

The 2015 WRX STI is exclusively equipped with the Multi-Mode Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) version of Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. This sophisticated system uses planetary-type center differential gears with a nominal 41:59 torque split. A mechanical limited-slip type center differential augments an electronically controlled center differential to enhance torque transfer performance.

Sensor inputs that include steering angle, throttle position, RPM, lateral-g, yaw, brake, ABS and wheel speed govern torque transfer response. A helical-type limited-slip front differential and a TORSEN® torque-sensing limited-slip rear differential optimize side-to-side torque distribution.

The DCCD AWD system features three automatic modes, each using varying degrees of center differential locking to match different driving situations. In manual mode, the driver can select one of six center differential locking levels to suit the driving situation.

Active Torque Vectoring, an enhancement of the Multi-Mode Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) stability and traction control system, can apply brake pressure to the inside front wheel to facilitate more neutral cornering. The VDC system offers yet more driver choices, with three settings: “VDC Normal,” “Traction” and “Off.” Each provides respectively lesser degrees of system engagement, allowing the driver to tailor response for the driving situation. Active Torque Vectoring remains engaged for “Normal” and “Traction” modes.

Premium Cabin

A one-inch longer wheelbase than the previous WRX STI helps provide a roomier cabin in the new model. The windshield is more raked than before, with the A-pillar pulled forward nearly eight inches at the base for better forward visibility, aided by a lower dashboard and narrower A-pillars. Lower side sills and wider-opening doors make ingress/egress easier. Rear seat legroom is increased by nearly two inches, and trunk capacity is now 12 cu. ft., up from 11.3 cu. ft. in the previous WRX STI sedan. A standard 60/40-split fold-down rear seat extends versatility. New available Welcome Lighting responds to the driver approaching the car.

In the 2015 WRX STI, the driver grips a new flat-bottom, leather-wrapped tilt/telescoping steering wheel that integrates switches for audio and Bluetooth control. The STI Design electroluminescent gauge panel gets a new 3.5-in. central LCD screen that displays various functions, including low-level warnings for oil and windshield washer fluid and the selected gear.

Rich-looking appointments and details abound, including soft-touch materials for the dashboard, door trim and center console armrest. A new multi-information central display with 4.3-in. LCD screen provides a multitude of vehicle system functions, including a standard rear camera display, a boost gauge display, audio (on non-navigation models), Bluetooth and climate control settings, and a VDC screen showing traction control operation. The display can also provide a vehicle self-check and maintenance reminder.

Standard features for the 2015 WRX STI include dual-zone automatic climate control and the All-Weather Package (dual-mode heated front seats, heated exterior mirrors and windshield wiper de-icer). The new standard audio system combines AM/FM stereo with HD Radio®, a single-disc in-dash CD player, 6 speakers, MP3/WMA capability, Radio Data Broadcast System (RDBS), Bluetooth hands-free calling and audio streaming, iPod® control capability, iTunes® Tagging, SiriusXM® Satellite Radio (subscription required), USB port and a 3.5mm auxiliary audio input jack. Numerous compartments located in and around the center console hold phones, USB drives and MP3 players.

An available touch-screen navigation system displays on a 6.1-inch LCD screen and offers voice controls. The WRX STI Limited model adds the luxury of leather-trimmed upholstery, an 8-way power driver’s seat, the harman/kardon premium audio system and a power moonroof that opens one inch farther than on the previous model.

Subaru Safety

Subaru’s renowned safety package uses the brand’s proven Ring-shaped Reinforcement Frame body structure, which has been shown to excel in the new small overlap test by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). In the cabin, a driver’s knee airbag is added to the roster of safety features that includes front side pelvis/torso airbags and side curtain airbags that offer front and rear outboard seat coverage.

Subaru produces a full line of all-wheel drive sedans, crossovers and SUVs, along with the rear-wheel drive BRZ sports car.

A Lineartronic® CVT (continuously variable transmission) is standard in the 2.0XT models and available for the 2.5i models, which feature a standard 6-speed manual transmission.

Like all Subaru passenger cars and SUVs, the 2014 Forester comes standard with Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, a distinction from competitive models that come with front-wheel drive as standard and offer all-wheel drive as an extra-cost option. (The Subaru BRZ sports car is rear-wheel drive.) High-line CVT-equipped 2014 Forester models also feature new Hill Descent Control and a new X-Mode, which provides extra control in certain driving conditions. The 8.7 inches of ground clearance for all 2014 Forester models is greater than for many crossovers and SUVs, yet the Forester maintains a comfortably low step-in height.

The 2014 Forester jumps to the head of its segment in all-wheel drive fuel economy, with the 2.5i model achieving EPA estimates of 24 mpg city / 32 mpg highway / 27 mpg combined (with CVT).

All but the base Forester 2.5i model come with a standard rear vision camera and color multi-function display. New available features include a power liftgate with automatic close, Keyless Access and Start and Subaru EyeSight, the highest rated front crash prevention system by IIHS. EyeSight integrates Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking and Vehicle Lane Departure Warning. The top-line Touring models come standard with a navigation system and 440-watt harman/kardon® 8-speaker audio system. The navigation system integrates the Aha® smartphone features, which include radio stations, newsfeeds, audiobooks and more.

XV Crosstrek® Hybrid is Brand’s First-Ever Gas/Electric Model

The all-new XV Crosstrek Hybrid offers all the capability and versatility of the gasoline XV Crosstrek, adding the benefits of a hybrid powertrain, including higher fuel efficiency. The XV Crosstrek Hybrid shares the gasoline model’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and chassis capability, including 8.7 inches of ground clearance.

The XV Crosstrek Hybrid combines a 2.0-liter Subaru BOXER engine with a 13.4-hp electric motor that’s integrated into the Lineartronic CVT. A 100.8V, 13.5kWh nickel-metal hydride battery is located under a revised rear floor area, and the engine uses and integrated starter/generator for the automatic start/stop feature. Under light acceleration, the Subaru-engineered hybrid system uses the electric motor for initial vehicle acceleration and then starts the gasoline engine once underway.

The electric motor can also assist acceleration in parallel with the gasoline engine, and an EV mode will operate the vehicle in certain low-speed situations. An Auto Start/Stop system shuts down the gasoline engine when the vehicle is stopped under certain conditions. Brake regeneration works when the car is coasting or the driver has applied the brake, recapturing kinetic energy from the turning wheels to recharge the battery. A new Active Grille Shutter system helps reduce air resistance, and the air conditioning system uses a temperature and humidity sensor to optimize operation for reduced draw on engine power.

The Active Torque Split version of Symmetrical AWD provides the same function and benefits as in the XV Crosstrek gasoline model. The system adjusts the front-to-rear torque distribution in response to acceleration, cornering and road conditions.

Passenger cabin room in the new XV Crosstrek Hybrid is essentially the same as in the gas model (0.7 cu. ft. difference), while the Hybrid’s maximum cargo room (rear seatbacks down) measures 50.2 cu. ft., vs. 51.9 in the gas model. Subaru retuned the platform’s suspension and revised the steering ratio to give the XV Crosstrek Hybrid sharper handling responses.

An exclusive wheel design and other exterior enhancements differentiate the Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid from the gasoline model. The Color Multi-Function Display shows the hybrid system’s energy flow according to driving conditions.

XV Crosstrek is A High-Efficiency, Go-Anywhere Crossover

New to the Subaru lineup in 2013, the XV Crosstrek delivers a high-capability crossover package with standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, 8.7 inches of ground clearance, 17-inch alloy wheels and ample room for passengers and cargo. Aha infotainment smartphone integration is included with the optional navigation system.

All 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek models are powered by a 148-horsepower 2.0-liter BOXER engine, teamed to a five-speed manual transmission or available Lineartronic CVT. EPA-estimated fuel economy figures of 25 mpg city / 33 mpg highway / 28 mpg combined (with CVT) put the 2014 XV Crosstrek among the most fuel-efficient crossovers on the market.

Subaru offers the 2014 XV Crosstrek in Premium and Limited models, the latter making the Lineartronic CVT standard and adding additional luxury amenities and infotainment technology, including a display-type audio system with HD Radio™ and a rear-vision camera. The All-Weather Package, which is standard for all XV Crosstrek models, features heated front seats, heated side mirrors and windshield wiper de-icer. Heated seats are often an extra-cost option even on some luxury models.

Subaru Legacy® and Outback® Add New Features for 2014

Following a year in which they gained new powertrains and revised styling, the Subaru Legacy sedans and Outback Sport Utility Wagon® models add more standard features and upgraded infotainment for 2014. The Legacy and Outback 2.5i models are powered by a 173-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder BOXER engine teamed to either a 6-speed manual transmission or the Lineartronic CVT. The Legacy and Outback 3.6R Limited models are powered by a 256-horsepower, 3.6-liter 6-cylinder BOXER engine teamed to a 5-speed automatic transmission.

The Subaru Legacy remains a standout in the midsize sedan field in terms of roominess, with 103 cu. ft., of total passenger room and a generous 37.8 inches of rear seat legroom. The versatile Outback offers 8.7 inches of ground clearance, which is greater than many crossovers and some SUVs, yet with a comfortably low step-in height.

Subaru introduced the advanced EyeSight driver-assist system for the 2013 Legacy and Outback Limited models, and for 2014 makes it also available in the Premium trim line. EyeSight, which uses innovative Subaru-developed stereo camera technology, integrates Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking and Vehicle Lane Departure Warning.

In the new Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Front Crash Prevention (FHP) test program, the 2014 Legacy sedan and Outback with the available EyeSight system were the only vehicles to receive highest possible score of six points and were two of seven models from 74 tested to receive highest possible “Superior” rating. The Superior rating is given to vehicles that have an autobraking system such as Subaru EyeSight and can avoid a crash or substantially reduce speeds in both tests. In addition, the 2014 Legacy and Outback models are Top Safety Pick+ award winners.

Subaru has upgraded the popular 2014 Legacy 2.5i Premium and Outback 2.5i Premium models to include as standard the All-Weather Package (heated front seats, heated side mirrors and windshield wiper de-icer). The Premium models now also come standard with the display audio system featuring a 4.3-inch screen, 6 speakers and SiriusXM Satellite Radio (including a 4-month free trial subscription). The display is compatible with the available rear camera system. Navigation is available as an option for Premium and Limited trim lines for Legacy and Outback.

Subaru Impreza® Offers 36-MPG Highway Fuel Economy with All-Wheel Drive

The new-generation Subaru Impreza 4- and 5-door compact models, which that Subaru of America, Inc. introduced for 2012, have been key players in the brand’s significant increase in sales and market share. With standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and exemplary fuel economy, the 2014 Impreza remains highly competitive with models that offer only front-wheel drive.

For 2014, Subaru made a rear vision camera standard on the Impreza 2.0 Limited models, using the 4.3-inch LCD screen of the display audio system. In addition, the available navigation system for the Premium and Limited models gains Aha Infotainment smartphone integration.

Powered by a 148-hp 2.0-liter BOXER engine, the Impreza 2.0 models offer fuel economy that’s comparable to some front-wheel drive compact cars. Impreza models with the Lineartronic CVT have EPA estimated ratings of 27 mpg city / 36 mpg highway / 30 mpg combined. A 5-speed manual transmission remains standard.

Subaru WRX® and WRX STI® are Global Performance Icons

Subaru uniquely offers two high-performance sport compacts, the WRX and the WRX STI, the latter equipped with the brand’s most powerful engine and most advanced dynamic control technology.

The 2014 Subaru WRX, available in 4- and 5-door models, offers more power than rivals such as the Ford Focus ST and Volkswagen GTI, neither of which offers all-wheel drive. In the WRX, a 2.5-liter turbocharged/intercooled four-cylinder BOXER engine produces 265-horsepower and 244 lb.-ft. of torque and is exclusively teamed with a 5-speed manual transmission. The Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system uses a viscous coupling locking center differential that splits the power 50:50 under normal traction conditions. If wheel slippage occurs, the center differential transfers torque to the wheels with the best traction. Standard equipment for the 2014 WRX includes sport-tuned suspension, 17-inch alloy wheels and an AM/FM/CD stereo with 6 speakers, Bluetooth audio streaming and hands-free phone connectivity and iPod® control. The WRX Premium and Limited add more amenities.

The 2014 Subaru WRX STI, which is also available in both 4- and 5-door models, takes the brand’s rally-bred road performance to the highest level. This model exclusively features a 305-horsepower turbocharged/intercooled BOXER engine, 6-speed manual transmission, performance suspension and the exclusive Multi-Mode Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) version of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. The WRX STI is also exclusively equipped with a Brembo® Performance Brake System, Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-DRIVE) and Multi-Mode Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system, the latter featuring a track performance-optimized mode.

Subaru BRZ® is the Affordable, Pure Sports Car with 200 HP

Subaru introduced the rear-drive BRZ for 2013 as a return to the purist-performance sports car. For 2014, Aha infotainment smartphone integration is added to the standard navigation system.

Powered by a naturally aspirated 200-horsepower BOXER engine, the BRZ is a sports car that does not sacrifice everyday comfort and practicality, including up to EPA-estimated 34-mpg highway fuel economy (with optional 6-speed automatic transmission). Subaru developed the rear-wheel drive BRZ with the fundamentals of sports car design in mind: low vehicle weight, an ultra-low center of gravity and precision steering. As a result, the low-slung BRZ delivers pinpoint handling agility and an unmatched driving experience for sports car enthusiasts of all skill levels.

The Subaru BRZ continues in Premium and Limited trim lines for 2014, the Limited offering additional comfort and amenities including seats upholstered with Alcantara inserts and leather bolsters, a dual-zone automatic climate control system and the All-Weather Package with dual-mode heated front seats and heated side mirrors. An optional automatic transmission is available in Limited trim.

Subaru Tribeca™ Limited Adds to Its Considerable Luxury for 2014

The Subaru Tribeca 7-passenger crossover SUV, available solely in the Limited trim line, gains a standard power moonroof for 2014. Also a change for 2014, the optional navigation system is packaged with rear seat entertainment system, which uses a 9-inch wide-screen format LCD screen and a DVD player featuring remote inputs for video games and a video camera.

The Tribeca’s 3.6-liter 6-cylinder BOXER engine produces 256 horsepower and 247 lb.-ft. of peak torque, with at least 225 lb.-ft. of torque available from 2,000 to 6,000 rpm. A specially tuned five-speed automatic transmission helps makes the Tribeca feel exceptionally smooth and responsive in everyday driving.

Luxury in the 2014 Tribeca Limited includes standard leather seating surfaces for front and second rows; 8-way power driver’s seat with 2-position memory; 4-way power passenger seat; dual-zone automatic climate control system; auxiliary air conditioning system for second and third rows; harman/kardon Premium Audio system with subwoofer; SiriusXM Satellite Radio (4-month trial subscription included); Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity; rear vision camera; a leather-wrapped steering wheel with remote audio controls, and ambient center console and cup-holder illumination.
