FAQ's

Below, you'll find answers to frequently asked questions about everything from maintenance, to modifications, to managing your MySubaru account.

MySubaru - Creating an Account

As a shopper you can save configured vehicles you create on Subaru.com to your personalized account. Once you purchase your new Subaru you can transition to an owner account and manage your vehicle(s), share owner stories and connect with owners at owner events.
Once you purchase your vehicle you can simply identify yourself as an owner and add your new Subaru with the vehicle’s VIN, or Vehicle Identification Number, to get added benefits and vehicle management functionality.
With VIN identification you will be able to better manage your vehicle, get automatic service updates and alerts, have dealer service records added to your account by your service dealer and many other benefits.

For new vehicle profiles you will add your VIN during the registration process.

For existing vehicle profiles without an associated VIN you will be prompted to add the VIN within the Edit Vehicle pop-up upon landing on the vehicle overview page.

To add a vehicle simply click the "Save Vehicle" link after you have configured your new Subaru vehicle, and either login or create a new MySubaru account. The vehicle you have configured will be added to your account.

To remove a vehicle you have configured from your MySubaru account simply click the "Delete Vehicle" link associated with the saved vehicle within the Built Vehicles section.

MySubaru - Maintaining Your Site

Your vehicle's mileage appears on the vehicle overview page, in the MySubaru quick overview area. Click on the "Update mileage" and a pop-up will appear that shows your current mileage. Update this number and click on "Update your mileage." If you're entering a mileage that the system thinks may be incorrect -- because it's significantly higher or lower than a previous mileage -- you'll receive a caution message asking you to double check the mileage you entered. Make sure your number is correct and click on "OK" again. Your mileage will be updated. Every time you update your mileage, the system "learns" more about your driving habits.
You may simply update your personal information by logging in to your account and then clicking "Edit my profile" and editing any of your personal information on the My Profile page.
Users can manage all of their email subscriptions on the My Profile page of MySubaru. Simply check or uncheck any of the email subscription you want to receive or discontinue.

We have updated MySubaru to allow users to log in to their account with their email address. If you do not remember the email address associated with your account, please contact Subaru Customer Service.

You may simply update your email address and/or password by logging in to your account and clicking on "your email address" to edit your email address and clicking on "Change password" to edit your password on the My Profile page.

Add a Vehicle: On your MySubaru homepage you will see a "Add a Vehicle" link which will launch a pop-up for you to enter your new vehicle's VIN (all model, trim and purchase date fields should then automatically populate), enter your vehicle's current mileage, vehicle's nickname, upload an optional vehicle image and then click "Create your vehicle" when finished.

Delete a Vehicle: On your vehicle overview page click on "Edit Vehicle" in the MySubaru quick overview area which will launch a pop-up and then click on "Delete" in the lower left hand corner to delete this vehicle from your MySubaru account.

No, we only publish first name, last initial and city with Owner Stories. We publish no personal information with suggested links.
In My Subaru on the vehicle overview page under My Dealer click on "Change dealer". This will provide a list of dealers in your area, make your selection and click "Make this my service dealer."

MySubaru - Maintaining Your Service History

Immediately when you identify your vehicle by adding your VIN, MySubaru will automatically begin recording two types of information in your Service History. These are:

  • Warranty, Added Security, and Recall/Service Campaign work
  • Maintenance and other work if your dealer participates in the Subaru CARE Program

NOTE: It generally takes up to 30 days for dealer repairs to appear on your site, but, depending on the communication link we have with your dealer, it may take longer. If you have not identified your vehicle’s VIN, no service information will be added to the vehicle being managed automatically.

Yes. Doing so will ensure that your MySubaru site has the complete service history you'd want to maintain for your Subaru vehicle. To create a new service entry, just follow these steps:

  • Click on "Service History" on the left.
  • Click on "Add new Service Entry" at the bottom of the Service History table
  • Fill in the name of the service provider (person or shop where the work was performed).
  • Fill in the date of the service and the mileage at the time the service was performed.
  • Use the pull-down menu to select the reason for the service performed. If the work was not one of the routine maintenance intervals, choose "Other" or "Repair" from the list, whichever is appropriate. Note: you may have to scroll up the list to view all maintenance options.
  • Fill in the services preformed.
  • Fill in any associated notes with this service entry.
  • Click "Save this service entry" when finished.
Yes. Just select the service entry that you wish to update, click on "Edit this entry" and fill in your notes within the Notes field and then click "Save this service entry."

Vehicle Specifications and Operations

A Vehicle Identification Number, commonly abbreviated to VIN (but sometimes referred to as VIN number), is a unique serial number used by the automotive industry to identify individual motor vehicles. VINs consist of 17 characters, with the last eight characters being unique to your specific vehicle. The VIN can usually be found on the driver's side dashboard near or at the bottom portion of the windshield. It can also be found on the certification label found on the driver's doorjamb on most vehicles.

We would be more than happy to check for any outstanding Service Campaigns on your vehicle. Please contact us either by phone at 1-800-782-2783 (1-800-SUBARU3) or online at https://www.subaru.com/shopping-tools/contact-us.html with your VIN so that we can further research your inquiry.

AWD Subaru vehicles with automatic transmission can only be towed with all four wheels OFF of the ground.

AWD Subaru vehicles with manual transmission can be towed with all four wheels on the ground and the transmission in neutral. When towing a manual transmission Subaru behind your motor home, you would put the transmission in neutral and have the key turned to the first position from "OFF". As all new models are equipped with digital odometers, mileage should not accumulate when being towed.

The suggested break-in period is for the first 1000 miles. The recommendations include:

  • not racing the engine
  • driving at moderate speeds while accelerating and braking smoothly
  • not driving at one constant engine or vehicle speed for a long time, either fast or slow
  • avoiding starting suddenly and rapid acceleration, except in an emergency
  • avoiding hard braking, except in an emergency

Following these recommendations will add to the performance and longevity of your vehicle. It enables all of the cars fluids and mechanisms to slowly get into an operation mode. During the break-in period, the engine and computer components need to "learn" how to drive. By driving at various speeds the engine will "learn" how to drive at these various speeds.

With each new Subaru vehicle, a Roadside Assistance plan is provided, for the life of the 3/36 warranty, which covers 24 hour roadside assistance, 365 days a year. Emergency towing for warranty repairs is provided to the nearest authorized Subaru dealership. Also provided is emergency roadside assistance for jump starts, emergency lockout service, gasoline service (up to 2 gallons), flat tire change and minor fluid replacement.

To contact Roadside Assistance, call 1-800-261-2155. When calling for assistance, please have your VIN, mileage, exact breakdown location, vehicle color/description and license plate number available to provide to the representative.

Navigation software updates may be purchased at an authorized Subaru dealer or via the following site: http://store.kenwoodusa.com/catalog.php?cat_id=S19.

Subaru does not offer seat covers for any of our vehicles. We do not recommend customers put any kind of cover, cloth or other objects over either front seatback, as it could interfere with the SRS side airbag if equipped. We do not recommend that customers attach labels or stickers to the front seat surface on or near the SRS side airbag. Doing so could prevent proper deployment of the SRS side airbag, reducing protection available to the front seats occupants.

Because there are so many child seats on the market today, we feel that it is best that you contact one of the following organizations for assistance: National SAFEKIDS Campaign at 800-441-1888 / www.safekids.org or SafetyBeltSafe USA at 800-745-7233 / http://www.carseat.org/.

Our 2001 Legacy and Outback models, 2002 Impreza models, 2003 Forester and Baja models include the LATCH system. Unfortunately, there is no retro-fit kit available for vehicles prior to these model years.

For more information about LATCH systems, go to www.Drive.Subaru.com. On-Line Exclusives, "Information on the LATCH System" in the Drive Magazine Fall 2002 issue. You can also refer to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) Web site (www.nhtsa.dot.gov) and enter "FAQ" in the Search Section. You will be able to locate and link to their Frequently Asked Questions on LATCH.

We do not recommend the installation of any aftermarket parts or making modifications of any factory components on our vehicles. Subaru of America does not test or research aftermarket products or modifications to know how they will work with our vehicles. Installing an aftermarket product or modifying a factory equipped component may affect your warranty on related component failures. Any problems caused by the installation or performance of an aftermarket product / modification will not be covered by the Subaru warranty.

Subaru has a Mobile-It-Ease Program* which provides reimbursement of up to $500 on new Subaru vehicles purchased from authorized U.S. Subaru dealers. This financial assistance is provided within 6 months of new vehicle purchase to help qualified owners pay for the necessary vehicle modifications due to medically recognized physical disabilities. Tires

We recommend that you replace your Subaru vehicle's tires with the same tires as originally equipped, as they were chosen specifically for your vehicle. If you are going to put on a different brand tire, we STRONGLY recommend that you use the same size/style as originally equipped. Please be sure to refer to the information in your Owner's Manual regarding tires.
The tires that come as original equipment on your Subaru are warranted by their manufacturer, not Subaru. To obtain service for tire concerns, take the tire to an authorized tire manufacturer dealer. Please contact your tire manufacturer to find the nearest tire center for your vehicle.
Subaru recommends the original equipment tires, as they were chosen specifically for your vehicle. If your area and/or climate require you to use a winter tire, we STRONGLY recommend that you use the same size/style as originally equipped. We also recommend that you refer to the information in your Owner's Manual regarding tires and winter driving.

Company Information and Contacts

The word Subaru in Japanese means "coming together" or cluster, such as the coming together of the 5 companies to make a 6th. So while the Subaru Pleiades constellation and the Subaru brand share the same name and same meaning one was not named for the other.
Subaru does not consider unsolicited advertising ideas due to the many legal ramifications involved. In fact, our advertising agency develops initial concepts for our next model year approximately six months in advance. We work very closely with our marketing partners in the development of our strategic goals and the creative executions created from that direction. Subaru has enjoyed success from the advertising developed in the last few years and will continue our efforts in the same vein.
