Under beautiful sunny skies, the Global RallyCross at Charlotte Motor Speedway got underway Sunday afternoon. Bucky Lasek and Sverre Isachsen both had great heat races and advanced directly to the final. Sverre Isachsen was in a tight battle with Brian Deegan, while Sverre and spotter Robert Vaa debated trying to pass. If Sverre made it cleanly past Deegan, he would gain a better start position in the final. However, with both top spots advancing they decided it was not worth the risk. In Bucky's heat, his #81 Subaru WRX STI was starting on the back row. Bucky knew aggressive tactics would be required to advance. When the signal went green, he launched his 600 horsepower Subaru and got to work. Bucky quickly position himself in the #2 spot and confidently stayed there until the checkered flag was waved on lap 6.
During the start of the final, the #11 and #81 WRX STI's eagerly complied rocketing off the grid. The two Subarus rounded the critical first turn in 3rd and 4th place. As the pack made their way around the dirt oval, the first two cars made contact and Sverre wasted no time passing both. However, a right hairpin towards the end of the oval caused a problem after Sverre made contact with another competitor. He missed the turn and and was sidelined. Shortly thereafter, the race was red flagged and all cars headed back to the start grid. Unfortunately, during the re-start towards the end of the first turn, Sverre was cut off by Ken Block. This forced the Viking Warrior into the barricades leaving him unable to continue. Meanwhile, Bucky Lasek developed a power steering issue and although able to complete the race, it was not with the vigor required to stay competitive.
The final 2013 Global RallyCross event takes place November 5th in Los Vegas as part of the annual SEMA auto show.
