Subaru Rally Team USA's David Higgins has scored an X Games Bronze medal in his 2011 Subaru WRX STI during the Rally Car Racing competition at X Games 17. This is the first time David Higgins has competed in the X Games and his podium finish shows that he has taken well to the competition format. After winning their respective first rounds, both SRT USA drivers, David Higgins and Dave Mirra, were bracketed against each other in the Quarterfinals. It was an extremely close race in which Higgins secured the hole-shot and Mirra followed right on his teammate's tail. The turning point of the battle was when the two drivers came into the Joker lap, Mirra trailing just behind Higgins. Without enough momentum to safely take the jump, Mirra wisely stopped short and reversed down the launch ramp. Dave then accelerated from a stop and cleared the jump cleanly; but, he had lost the race to his teammate and did not advance to the Semifinals. Although it is unfortunate that the elimination bracketing dictated that only one SRT USA car could advance to the Rally Car Racing podium, the spectacle of Higgins and Mirra racing neck-and-neck was a truly entertaining experience.
Both Subaru Rally Team USA cars performed flawlessly and completed the day in perfect running order, once again proving the capabilities of the 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI platform. With barely a scratch on either car, SRT USA is in great shape to take on the field in tomorrow's RallyCross event. Living up to expectations, the X Games 17 rally course set on the streets of downtown LA made for fantastic spectating. The straights on South Figueroa Street and the transitions to gravel provided an excellent blend of high-speed performance and technical demands. Given the excitement that was present with two rally cars at a time, tomorrow's full RallyCross grid will undoubtedly provide a show that surpasses anything in the history of X Games rally competition.
