The Subaru PUMA RallyCross Team had an outstanding day at the Bristol Motor Speedway Saturday afternoon. The Viking Warrior wasted no time flexing his muscles and won his second heat race and placed 4th in the final. Thousands of people had flocked into the massive stadium and were thrilled to see these 600 horsepower cars play like toys in the "World's Fastest Half Mile." During the dramatic start of the final race, Sverre Isachsen had a front row slot and his 2013 Subaru WRX STI shot down the straight like a speeding bullet. As always, the first turn was a conundrum of tire smoke and horsepower, but Sverre Isachsen held his ground and even had the lead before he was rear ended. The impact crushed his exhaust and severely limited engine power. In spite of this, Sverre in the #11 STI drove flawlessly to a 4th overall finish. Without the restricting exhaust damage, there is no telling how far up the ranks the Viking Warrior would have landed. An ecstatic Sverre commented after the race "Next time I'm going to bring my bigger horn, the real big one and they won't have a chance!"
The morning qualifying runs and initial heats also ran smoothly, especially for Dave Mirra who clocked the fastest single lap time, beating out rival and former Subaru driver Ken Block by 2/10ths of a second. Unfortunately, in the second set of heats, Dave damaged his steering and was unable to complete the race. Bucky Lasek who had been catching massive air all weekend got down to business in the LCQ and set the fastest lap time in the group. However, despite these efforts, both Bucky Lasek and Dave Mirra were unable to advance to the final.
The stunning track, thousands of excited race fans, and high-speed action at the Bristol Motor Speedway was a home run for everyone involved. The Subaru PUMA RallyCross Team has come a long way and with this weekend's performance it will be a real thrill to see these supercars once again battle for gold at X Games in Los Angeles in less than two weeks!
