The final round of the 2011 Global RallyCross Championship has concluded with a dramatic final race just south of Colorado Springs, CO. Spectators packed Pikes Peak International Raceway on Saturday and the drivers signature session tent was mobbed as fans eagerly met with competitors.
The racing got underway early in the afternoon and Subaru Rally Team USA's David Higgins won both of his heat races in his 2011 Subaru WRX STI. The car has really come into its own as a competitive rallycross machine and it was very exciting for SRT USA to see their hard work paying off.
The A Main Final was fully stacked with an unprecedented eight vehicles on the starting grid. With thousands of horsepower crackling at the start, it was a sight to be seen and heard. While running eight cars at the same time, it was impossible for racers to avoid contact. Despite a spin on the first lap caused by a bump from another competitor, Higgins emerged from the zero-visibility dust cloud and ran the remaining four laps flawlessly, expertly piloting the #75 WRX STI to a podium finish.
David Higgins and Subaru Rally Team USA soon head to their next conquest, tackling the Climb to the Clouds race at the Mt. Washington Auto Road in celebration of its 150th anniversary. Higgins is out to beat the record set last year by Travis Pastrana, who was also driving a Subaru WRX STI prepared by Vermont SportsCar.
