- Why Subaru
We work hard to contribute to a strong quality of life in the communities we serve by supporting efforts such as job skills training, youth education, helping to keep food banks stocked, engaging families in the natural world, animal welfare programs, and more.
We do this in a number of ways, from direct financial support through the Subaru of America Foundation and corporate giving, to employee volunteerism and other forms of engagement such as Share the Love and Love Promise. Our goal here is simple to help our communities thrive.
We approach community engagement with the same spirit and tenacity as we do our commitment to our core business. For example, our employees recognize that it takes more than money to create real change. That’s why we provide many different kinds of volunteer opportunities that employees can engage in during work hours, from joining in the fight against hunger to providing resources to advance educational and career opportunities and more. Through these efforts Subaru employees have generously donated thousands of hours of their time and talent to create positive change in their local communities last year alone.
We take great pride in our community activities and in the impact we have made — and continue to make — working side-by-side with our many community partners. The following examples highlight just some of the ways we work to engage with our communities.
Camden, NJ is a city in transition. Once a dynamic shipping and industrial town, it fell on hard times with high poverty, unemployment and crime. But its residents are resilient and dedicated to restoring the City to its former glory. Subaru will call Camden home in early 2018 when it anticipates moving into its new corporate headquarters. While Camden has been a focus of Subaru’s financial and employee volunteerism efforts for years, Subaru is looking at new and creative ways in which it can be part of the City’s revitalization.
Subaru Camden Works is designed to showcase that Camden does in fact work. Our current focus is on enhancing the employability of – and employment opportunities for – Camden’s residents. The program kicked off in April 2016 with the announcement of Subaru’s first partnership with Respond, Inc. in North Camden. This is the first of many partnerships to come.
The Food Bank of South Jersey (FBSJ) provides food to those in need and teaches them about nutritious eating while helping them find sustainable ways to improve their lives. This Southern Jersey non-profit operates on the simple premise that food should not be wasted when hungry people are in our midst.
With this in mind, FBSJ has built an effective food distribution program that links nearly 10 million pounds of food with approximately 250 charitable food providers annually, including food pantries, community kitchens and shelters in four counties across South Jersey (Camden, Burlington, Gloucester and Salem.)
The American Red Cross is synonymous with providing aid and assistance during some of the most difficult times in peoples’ lives, and Subaru has been a supporter of the Red Cross for many years. Now Subaru has elevated its support of the Red Cross by becoming a Platinum 365 Member. This means that Subaru “pre-invests” in relief, ensuring the Red Cross has supplies and people at the ready nationwide, in order to respond, day and night. Subaru’s support enables the Red Cross to better help those in need when disaster strikes, and our support helps Red Cross prevent disasters as well, through programs like home fire prevention and measles eradication.
