Subaru Driver David Higgins Defends Title with Dominating Win at the 2012 Sno*Drift Rally

CHERRY HILL, N.J., Jan. 30, 2012 -- Subaru of America, Inc. Defending 2011 Rally America National Champion David Higgins launched his 2012 title defense with Subaru Rally Team USA by achieving a decisive victory this past weekend at the Sno*Drift Rally. Higgins, driving a 5-door 2012 Subaru WRX STI rally car, dominated the rally leading from the start and winning 15 of the event's 24 competitive stages. Higgins finished nearly two minutes clear of his closest rival. The Sno*Drift was not easy by any respect; David's biggest challenge was keeping his STI on the event's treacherously icy roads. Higgins proclaimed the variable and slick road conditions as the toughest rallying he has ever encountered.

The Sno*Drift Rally, round one of the six-event 2012 Rally America National Championship, challenged nearly 70 top rally teams with over 130 miles of snow and ice-covered roads in northern Michigan. Constant changes in weather and road conditions coupled with several stages run in total darkness make this rally notoriously challenging. Drivers will attest that the biggest challenge of the rally is that spiked or studded tires are not allowed, making traction extremely elusive when conditions are icy. Drivers this year were greeted with exactly that; a recent thaw and subsequent freeze turned many of the stage roads into sheets of smooth ice.

Higgins and his co-driver Craig Drew were up for the challenge from the onset and all but sealed their victory with a commanding performance on the first loop of stages where Higgins posted several blisteringly fast stage times while his rivals struggled with the icy conditions. After winning the opening four stages, Higgins had amassed a nearly two-minute lead on his rivals before the first service halt. However, maintaining that lead on the treacherously ice-covered roads was one of the biggest challenges the veteran rally pro Higgins has ever tackled.

"The icy roads combined with lack of spiked tires makes this one of the toughest rallies and a challenge I think that is unique in rallying anywhere in the world," explained Higgins. "Mentally it's very draining, as you are constantly on the edge all weekend with the knowledge that any small mistake could just end the rally. The grip levels would go from variable to non-existent in a flash."

The lead Higgins had amassed on the opening day of competition was only briefly under threat for the first loop of stages on the morning of day-two. Higgins, running on ice tires, encountered fresh snow on the stages allowing his chief rival Antoine L'Estage, who had chosen a snow tire, to claw back some time. After switching to snow tires at the first service, Higgins responded to the threat and won five straight stages to regain nearly all of the time lost in the morning while sealing his victory.

"This was a great victory and a strong result to start our title defense," explained Higgins. "Our Subaru was perfect all weekend and allowed Craig [Drew] and I to just concentrate on the job under these wild conditions."

Added James Han, motorsports marketing manager for Subaru of America, Inc., "David and Craig drove prudently to a tremendous result, and Subaru Rally Team USA prepared a car in our 2012 Subaru WRX STI that has proven to be the class of the field this weekend. Having to constantly assess traction levels under such difficult road conditions within the context of competition driving rapidly takes a mental toll, and our #75 driver pairing truly rose to the occasion and ultimately prevailed."

Higgins and Subaru Rally Team USA head next to the high-speed gravel roads of The Rally in the 100 Acre Wood, Feb 24-25, in central Missouri.

Subaru Runs Strong in GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Opener

Factory Team's WRX STI runs as high as 3rd at Daytona

Phoenixville, PA. Jan. 30, 2012 -- Facing a 40-car field in the Grand Sport class of the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Championship racing series, Subaru Road Racing Team's (SRRT) drivers ran as high as third place in their 4-door #35 Subaru WRX STI at the season-opening race held at the world-famous Daytona International Speedway.

Subaru driver Andrew Aquilante, Phoenixville, Pa., worked his way to the third spot and held the position from laps 36 through 38, but an on-track incident on the last lap of the race, involving another Grand Sport class competitor, knocked the team's #35 Subaru out of the race, and eventually classified in the 28th spot.

Teammate Bret Spaude, Bushnell, Fl. qualified seventh fastest for the race, only one mph off the pole sitter's qualifying speed. He raced the first 24 laps of the 58-lap, two and a half-hour race on Daytona’s 3.56-mile combinational oval track and infield road course. The pair shared a race-prepped 2012 4-door Subaru WRX STI developed specifically to go against rival teams within a class in which cars customarily produce over 400 horsepower.

"Our Subaru's performance in practice, qualifying, and the race was solid and the preparation by the crew simply excellent. We learned a bit during the practice days and applied them into this weekend," said Joe Aquilante, principal of Phoenix Performance in Phoenixville, Pa., where SRRT makes its base operations.

"Brett qualified seventh fastest and was in fourth place at the end of the first lap. He did an excellent job in his 24 laps. Then, A.J. [Andrew] got up to third place on lap 38. The last lap collision came while he was attempting a pass in the bustop [section of the race course], and a car ahead of him unexpectedly spun and contact was unavoidable. Now that our car will be back at our race shop for two months before the next round, we'll dig deeper and find those extra tenths of a second [per lap]."

Added James Han, motorsports marketing manager for Subaru of America, Inc., "Our final race result from Daytona [International Speedway] won't accurately reflect the on-track performance from our STI and the polished teamwork displayed by SRRT, but our program shows great promise, and I'm looking forward to the upcoming rounds in the championship."

The Daytona race was televised by SPEED TV for broadcast on February 4th at 12 noon EST. The next race is March 30-31 at Barber Motorsports Park near Birmingham, Ala.

Sponsors for SRRT include Subaru Of America, Inc., Subaru Tecnica International (STI), Subaru Performance Tuning (SPT), Hawk Brakes, Ron Davis Racing Radiators, Automotive Racing products, Rotary Lifts, Carbonetic, and Perrin.

Subaru Prepares for GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge

4-Door Subaru WRX STI Model to form basis of race campaign

PHOENIXVILLE, Pa., Jan. 23, 2012 -- Subaru of America, Inc. Subaru Road Racing Team (SRRT) announced today that drivers Andrew Aquilante and Bret Spaude return as factory team drivers for Subaru's entry in the Grand Sport (GS) class of the 2012 GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.  The first round of the series is at the historic Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, FL, on January 27, 2012.

Fielding a race-prepped 2012 4-door Subaru WRX STI developed specifically to compete in a class replete with rival team cars developing over 400 horsepower, SRRT has been working on a technical progression program for the #35 STI during the off-season.  Traditionally serving as round one of the championship, Daytona International Speedway incorporates a portion of its high-banked oval plus infield complex to create a 3.56-mile, 12-turn road course, which places a high emphasis on maximum power output and aero efficiency.

Co-drivers for the #35 Subaru WRX STI will be Andrew Aquilante of Chester Springs, Pa., and Bret Spaude of Bushnell, Fla., who comprise one pairing in a class of over 30 teams set to contest the Grand Sport class.

SRRT Principal Joe Aquilante noted, "We've enjoyed a very productive off-season, and our team is looking forward to getting back to the business of racing our Subaru WRX STI. Our drivers have been focusing on honing their physical fitness while our technical staff has been diligently progressing our car development plan. To say that we're excited for Daytona is an understatement."

Added James Han, motorsports marketing manager for Subaru of America, Inc., "I feel confident that we have the elements in place to mount a successful bid for the championship. To begin, the Subaru WRX STI lends itself as a credible performance platform from its symmetrical all-wheel drive system to its Subaru BOXER engine. The team is looking to build upon our experience from last year's campaign and convert our solid qualifying efforts to podium results."

Subaru to Continue Offering the Most Lucrative Rally Contingency Program in North America

CHERRY HILL, N.J., Jan. 23, 2012 -- Subaru of America, Inc. announced today the continuation of their contingency program, the Subaru Rally Support Program, for the 2012 Rally America National Championship. The Subaru Rally Support Program is managed by Subaru of America Inc., partner Vermont SportsCar and continues to be the most lucrative contingency program in North American rallying, with over $20,000 available at each Rally America National Championship event for Subaru drivers to earn. The program focuses support on the popular Super Production class (SP) within the Rally America National Championship where the top finishing eligible Subaru SP driver will earn $7,000 at each round while second through 10th placed SP drivers receiving generous payouts as well.

Subaru Image

The Super Production (SP) class was created in 2009 by Rally America to offer an enticing compromise between the top-tier Open class and the more restrictive Production GT (PGT) class. The SP class provides a means for cost-effective competition for Subaru models such as the WRX and WRX STI to compete not only head-to-head with but also be capable of challenging the top of the leader board at any Rally America National Championship event.

SP class driver Travis Hanson drove this point home with an impressive 2011 season at the wheel of his SP class Subaru WRX STI becoming the first SP class driver to win a national rally outright (2011 Sno*Drift Rally) and leading the championship points standings for nearly half the season.  Hanson went on to finish third overall in the season standings after consistently battling the top Open class cars on each round.

One of the key attractions of the SP class for Subaru drivers is the allowance of several key modifications to Subaru WRX and WRX STI model rally cars to make them more affordable and competitive to prepare and run as compared to meeting compliance for the PGT class. This includes but is not limited to: allowing vehicles to be updated or backdated within a body style of the model, fitting of hydraulic handbrakes, and granting broader brake system modifications. The SP class also features a larger 34mm turbo inlet restrictor versus the 32mm in the PGT class.

"Subaru as a brand, and our WRX and WRX STI models in particular, are widely recognized as having rally-DNA and being associated with performance and rallying in general," said James Han, motorsports marketing manager for Subaru of America, Inc. "By announcing a continuation in the [Subaru] Rally Support Program, Subaru reaffirms our commitment to privateer entrants campaigning our products in Rally America events and to the growth of rally in the United States."

In addition to this continued support to SP class participants at Rally America National Championship events Subaru of America Inc. will also offer a $200 'start fund' to any eligible Subaru entered in a Rally America Regional rally that runs concurrent to a national event weekend.

**Eligibility rules apply. Please read complete program rules and regulations here: http://vtcar.com/rally/subaru-contingency-program/

David Higgins to Defend Rally America Crown With Subaru Rally Team USA in 2012 Championship

CHERRY HILL, N.J., Jan. 18, 2012 -- Subaru of America, Inc. Subaru Rally Team USA (SRT USA) announced today that David Higgins, the 2011 Rally America National Champion will continue as factory driver for the team in 2012 in a bid to defend his title. Higgins and SRT USA begin the 2012 Rally America National Championship at the season opener Sno*Drift Rally in northern Michigan, Jan. 27 and 28 against a stacked field of over 70 entries. Co-driver Craig Drew will once again join Higgins; the duo will pilot a Vermont SportsCar-prepared 2012 Subaru WRX STI in all six rounds of the 2012 Rally America National Championship.

X Games icon Dave Mirra, Higgins' Subaru teammate in 2011, is expected to continue to drive for Subaru but will focus on the Global RallyCross Championship, because of several conflicting dates with the Rally America Championship event calendar. An announcement about the team's rallycross plans will be made in the near future.

Higgins joined Subaru Rally Team USA at the start of the 2011 season, and had an impressive year at the wheel of his Subaru WRX STI, earning three victories and two-second overall finishes in the six-event 2011 Rally America National Championship; as well as claiming victory and a new record at the famed Mt. Washington Hillclimb. The 2011 Rally America driver's title was the third for Higgins in the USA having won the SCCA ProRally Championship in 2002 and 2003. Higgins also won the British Rally Championship in 2004 after winning the Group N title in the British Rally Championship in 1997, 1999, and 2002. As a testament of his passion for the sport, Higgins and his family also operate a UK-based training facility, The Forest Experience Rally School. Higgins was born on the Isle of Man but resides in Wales with his wife and two children.

"I'm excited to defend my title with Subaru as we have made some great progress in the development of our STI rally car in the off-season, and so the confidence is high right now," explained Higgins. "The Rally America Championship is a fantastic series with a great mix of events and conditions coupled with a very high level of competition.  I expect 2012 to be a big fight but we have the right car and the right team, so I'm really looking forward to it!"

"Subaru Rally Team USA is kicking off the 2012 season with aggressive goals in place while maintaining a dedicated approach towards defending our Rally America title and contending for the Global RallyCross Championship," indicated James Han, motorsports marketing manager for Subaru of America, Inc. "I'm encouraged to have the 2012 Subaru WRX STI serve as our technical backdrop and renew our ongoing partnership with Vermont SportsCar. Sno*Drift [Rally] will be a great measure of our current level of preparedness against what looks to be a healthy entry list."

2013 Subaru BRZ Sports Car to be Displayed at Consumer Electronics Show

Subaru to announce infotainment partnership at show

Subaru BRZ focuses on low center of gravity, low-weight and handling

BRZ announces the return of the pure sports car

CHERRY HILL, N.J., Jan. 6, 2012 -- Subaru of America Inc. announced today that the production version of its all-new, rear-wheel drive 2013 Subaru BRZ sports car will be on display at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, January 10th through the 13th.  This will be Subaru's first appearance at CES.  The BRZ will add a new product line to the hot Subaru brand, which announced its fourth consecutive year of sales growth and a new all-time vehicle sales record for 2011.

The 2013 BRZ, which arrives in Subaru dealerships in late spring, was designed with one goal in mind---exceptional handling. To reach that goal, Subaru engineers developed a chassis that would deliver the lowest center of gravity (CoG) possible utilizing the excellent packaging of the brand's Boxer engine design.

An all-new naturally aspirated 2.0-liter, 200-horsepower horizontally opposed (Boxer) engine was created. The new FA engine was developed to be more compact so that it could be placed lower and farther back in the chassis.  To achieve the low CoG, a rear-drive layout was deemed necessary so the engine could be mounted as low as possible in the chassis. The engine placement allows for low polar moment and near-perfect balance for pure sports car handling.

With a low vehicle weight of just over 2,700 lbs., the direct injected 2.0-liter provides quick acceleration as it revs to its 7,400 RPM redline. The Subaru BRZ is available with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

With a height of just 50.6 inches, swept-back roofline, bulging front fenders, short overhangs and pronounced rear haunches give the sleekly styled BRZ a lean, athletic stance. The Subaru BRZ will offer everyday comfort and practicality with 2+2 seating and expandable trunk space, along with the brand's renowned safety and quality.

The 2013 Subaru BRZ reflects the brand's core powertrain and chassis engineering throughout.

Subaru produces a full line of all-wheel drive sedans, crossovers and SUV's, and adding the BRZ sports car to its portfolio showcases the brand's penchant for engineering vehicles that offer excellent road manners.

Subaru will also announce a new partnership that will enhance infotainment offerings in future models.

The Subaru BRZ will be on display at the Pepcom Digital Experience! at the MGM Grand on January 9th and in the CES Central Plaza at the Las Vegas Convention Center January 10th through the 13th.

SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC. REPORTS 2011 ALL-TIME SALES RECORD

Strong Demand Leads to Third Successive Sales Record for Subaru Brand

Subaru Only Maker to Post Sales Increases for Four Consecutive Years

December 2011 Marks Best-Ever Sales Month for Brand

CHERRY HILL, N.J., Jan 4, 2012 – Subaru of America, Inc. today reported record vehicle sales for 2011 of 266,989. Subaru has now posted sales records in each of the past three years and Subaru is the only manufacturer in the US to have posted four successive years of sales growth.

The December sales total also marks Subaru's best-ever sales month, eclipsing the previous best month of August 2009 – the "Cash for Clunkers" month.

The 2011 achievement for Subaru is all the more remarkable considering the company had to contend with significant production delays caused by the tsunami and earthquake in Japan in March 2011. To respond to strong consumer demand for its latest products, and to make up for lost production, Subaru's parent company Fuji Heavy Industries increased vehicle manufacture in the second half of 2011 and the company is now producing more cars per month than at any time in its history.

Demand for the Subaru Legacy, Outback and Forester models continued to be strong in 2011 with Legacy and Outback setting individual records. The all-new 36 mpg Impreza began retail sales in November, boosting sales still further. With consumer demand so high, the company predicts a fourth record year in 2012 with sales likely to reach the milestone 300,000 mark.

Thomas J. Doll, executive vice president and COO, Subaru of America, Inc said; "We are thrilled to close 2011 with a third consecutive sales record for Subaru. We need to thank our retailers, distributors, our employees and of course the dedication and commitment of Fuji Heavy Industries staff for making these results possible. 2011 was the best year in our history, but with our production levels now running at their highest ever, and our best ever line-up in place, we are committed to another record-setting year in 2012."

"We are very pleased to welcome the 266,989 customers to the Subaru family" said Bill Cyphers, senior vice president of sales, Subaru of America, Inc. "With production now catching up to demand, our December sales show the potential for the Subaru brand for 2012. We delivered 34,000 cars in to dealers in December, beating our previous highest total by 5,000. Given how quickly our products are moving, we expect to reach another significant sales milestone in 2012".
