David Higgins Wins Bronze Medal at ESPN X Games 17 Rally Car Racing Event

Higgins medals in his first X Games

Los Angeles, CA., July 29, 2011 - Subaru of America, Inc. Subaru Rally Team USA driver David Higgins conquered the streets of downtown Los Angeles to earn a Bronze medal at Saturday's ESPN Summer X Games 17 Rally Car Racing event. Higgins piloted his 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Rallycross car to three head-to-head victories on the dirt and tarmac course held on the streets surrounding the Staples Center to claim his first X Games medal.

"Words cannot describe it," Higgins said of the racing. "The atmosphere, the whole thing. There is no room for error anywhere with the brick walls and cars and everything. It is probably the most wild thing you can do in a car, but it is brilliant."

One of the highlights of the event, broadcast live on ESPN, was the Quarterfinals where Higgins and his Subaru teammate Dave Mirra went head-to-head driving identical Subaru STI Rallycross cars. Higgins beat Mirra off the start line but Mirra slowly reeled in Higgins and attempted to pass him on the final lap, briefly making contacting with Higgins' Subaru.

"He got a great start but I saw that I was slowly getting closer to him and then had a great shot at making a pass but wasn't able to pull it off without risking too much damage," explained Mirra.

The ESPN Summer X Games Rally Car Racing featured drivers racing production-based cars on street course in downtown Los Angeles. The goal in Rally Car Racing is to accumulate the lowest elapsed driving time while racing in two-car, head-to-head heats. The three-quarter mile long Rally course, alongside the concrete cityscape of Los Angeles, includes two sections of raw dirt. In each heat, drivers complete two laps of the entire course, which must include one traditional Rally Joker lap. The Joker lap forces drivers to launch their car over a 52-foot dirt-to-dirt gap jump.

The highly anticipated X Games Rallycross main event takes place on Sunday. Utilizing the same street course, drivers will battle in four-car head-to-head heats and then in the finale an eight-car field will battle for X Games gold.

Subaru Rally Team USA Drivers David Higgins and Dave Mirra to Compete at Summer X Games 17

Los Angeles, July 29, 2011 -- Subaru of America, Inc. Subaru Rally Team USA drivers David Higgins and Dave Mirra head to Los Angeles this week to compete in Summer X Games 17. Higgins and Mirra look to add to the team's successes at X Games competing in the Rally Car and Rallycross events July 30th and 31st respectively. Each will drive a 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI modified for Rallycross with an excess of 550 horsepower Boxer engine and Symmetrical All Wheel Drive.

For 2011, Higgins won the Rally America Championship after three overall wins and two second place finishes of the six events of the series. In June, he smashed the 13-year course record at the Mt. Washington Hill Climb and placed second at the A Main final of the Global Rallycross series at Pikes Peak. David is competing in his first X Games.

"I have heard so much about the X Games and have watched from home many times so I'm really looking forward to being a part of it," said Higgins. "There really is nothing like it in the world and to be racing on the streets of Los Angeles should be spectacular for the drivers and the fans."

David Higgins, a native of the Isle of Man, got his first taste of motorsport when he was only eight years old and has enjoyed success ever since. After a winning karting career and an opportunity to rally in the Peugeot 205 Challenge, David went onto win the 1997, 1999 and 2002 British Rally Championship in the Group N Class. In 2002 he also came to America as a privateer and won the SCCA Pro Rally Championship (Now known as Rally America) while driving a Subaru. He repeated his success in 2003 winning six events and again claiming the SCCA Pro Rally Championship. For 2004 it was back to Britain where David contested the full season and became the British Rally Champion. David also began rallying in the ultra-competitive Chinese Rally Championship in 2004 where he helped his team win the Team's Championship in 2004, 2007 and 2009 (foreign drivers can't score individual points).

Higgins now lives in Trefeglwys, Mid Wales, with his wife Kara and his children Alicia and Matthew. David and his family operate "The Forest Experience Rally School". The school is well-known and respected for offering world-class rally driving instruction to all levels of driver. David's grandparents and parents have all been successful rally drivers, and David's brother Mark competes at the highest level in the sport (Set the fastest lap at the Isle of Man TT for a production vehicle this past June).

Dave Mirra, who became a pro BMX rider in 1992, holds the record for most total X Games medals, as well as the record for most Gold medals. He is one of the world's best-known Action Sports athletes and is credited with bringing freestyle BMX into the mainstream.

Dave has always been a car enthusiast and became hooked on rallying after friend, and then Subaru Rally Team USA driver, Ken Block introduced him to the sport. Mirra stepped up to an Open Class Subaru Impreza WRX STI in the 2010 season where he and co-driver Martin Headland entered five Rally America rounds and also at X Games 16 in Los Angeles. Mirra also competed in the 2010 Rally Car Rallycross series held at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, New Jersey. Dave was highly successful at this new discipline earning podium finishes at two of the three rounds.

This year Mirra piloted his Open Class SRT USA #40 STI at five Rally America events and finished 4th Overall in the season standings. He also competed in two Global Rallycross Championship events garnering a 4th and a 6th place finish.

ESPN X Games added the Rally Car Racing event in 2006 as part of multi-sport lineup that includes action sports such as skateboarding, freestyle motocross and BMX. The inclusion of rallying at the X Games with its live television coverage and a live audience of tens of thousands has helped rallying achieve widespread awareness and popularity in America over the past five years. For 2011 the Rally Car Racing event features two rally cars at a time running head-to-head in a knock-out elimination format. The Rallycross event is modeled after the successful FIA European Rallycross Championship where up to eight Rallycross cars compete on the track at once in a furious sprint of just a few short laps. New for 2011 both events will take place on the streets of Los Angeles in front of the Staples Center and will include dirt sections and a 70ft gap jump.

Subaru Driver David Higgins Wins 2011 Rally America National Championship

5th Rally America title in past six years for Subaru Rally Team USA

Cherry Hill, N.J., July 18, 2011 -- Subaru of America, Inc. Subaru Rally Team USA driver David Higgins has won the 2011 Rally America National Championship with a 2nd Overall finish at the season finale, the New England Forest Rally, this past weekend. In a hotly contested season Higgins and his co-driver Craig Drew piloted their BFGoodrich Tires-shod 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI rally car to three victories and two 2nd Overall finishes in the six-event Rally America National Championship. The 2011 driver's title is the third for Higgins in the USA having won the SCCA ProRally Championship in 2002 and 2003. Higgins also won the British Rally Championship in 2004.

"It's amazing and hasn't really sunk in yet," explained Higgins at the podium celebration. "The level of competition was really fierce all year, and it was a big challenge for me to come back to the USA after seven years away and adjust to new events, a co-driver I had never worked with before as well as new car. But everything meshed really well and our Subaru STI was a joy to drive fast. Driving for Subaru is every rally driver's dream as the brand is so famous for rallying, so this is something really special for me."

"Both David and Craig have done a stellar job the entire season extracting the utmost performance from their STI, supported by the solid car preparation by our team," noted James Han, motorsports marketing manager for Subaru of America, Inc. "With the championship comprised of only six rounds against defending titleholders Antoine [L'Estage] and Nathalie [Richard] with their experience on those events makes SRT USA's successful effort in regaining the championship that much more special. The effort of our team members and supporting sponsors has been exceptional, and the superlative performance of our STI was properly showcased."

Higgins joined Subaru Rally Team USA at the start of the 2011 season, replacing longtime Subaru team driver Travis Pastrana who had earned the Rally America National Championship from 2006 through 2009. A season-long rivalry quickly ensued between Higgins and Canadian rally ace Antoine L'Estage, the defending Rally America Champion and Canadian Rally Champion. Higgins and L'Estage were at each other's heels at every rally with the rivalry coming to a dramatic head last month at the Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally where Higgins came from behind late in the event to beat L'Estage by a mere 1.3 seconds.

The victory last month in Pennsylvania earned Higgins enough of a points lead over L'Estage that Higgins only needed to finish fourth or better at the New England Forest Rally this weekend to secure the driver's title. A tactical fight ensued in New England with Higgins maintaining a 2nd overall position behind L’Estage while driving just fast enough to keep the chasing pack comfortably behind him.

In addition to three event victories and the driver's title in the Rally America series, Higgins recently won the re-born Mt. Washington 'Climb to the Clouds' Hillclimb. He smashed the course record by over 30 seconds, driving the same Subaru STI he utilized in the Rally America Championship. Higgins has little time to celebrate, earlier this month he was invited to compete at ESPN Summer X Games 17 in Los Angeles. He will compete in both the Rally Car Racing and RallyCross competitions taking place on July 30th and 31st respectively.
